Fired S.C. trooper is Valley graduate

LISBON

The South Carolina state trooper under scrutiny after he shot an unarmed man during a routine traffic stop grew up in Columbiana County, Vindicator broadcast partner 21 WFMJ-TV reported Friday.

Sean Groubert is a 2002 graduate of Beaver School District.

A dash-cam video shows Groubert asking for the driver’s license of a man standing in a gas station parking lot in Columbia, S.C., then opening fire on the man after he reached into his car to get his license.

In the video, the man, identified as Lamar Jones, tells Groubert he cannot feel his leg and asks why Groubert shot him. Jones was hit in the hip.

Groubert was fired from his job and is facing charges of assault and battery. Authorities called the case disturbing and said Groubert reacted to a perceived threat where there was none, WFMJ reported.
