Howard A. Kuhn was named the recipient of the America Makes Distinguished Collaborator Award this year.

Kuhn, a technical adviser for America Makes and an adjunct professor at the University of Pittsburgh’s Swanson School of Engineering, received the award for his dedication and contribution to the institute at the America Makes Program Management Review meeting this week at the DeYor Performing Arts Center in Youngstown.

“On behalf of all of us at America Makes, I am honored to present the inaugural America Makes Distinguished Collaborator Award to our long-time friend and esteemed colleague, Dr. Howard Kuhn, in recognition of his many and significant contributions not only to America Makes, but also to the field of additive manufacturing and 3-D printing,” said Ralph Resnick, America Makes founding director. Kuhn teaches a course at America Makes titled “Fundamentals of Additive Manufacturing Materials and Processes.”

Upon America Makes’ founding in August 2012, Kuhn served as acting deputy director of Advanced Manufacturing Enterprise and shared his expertise and helped “to establish a solid foundation for the new institute.”

Kuhn is a research consultant for The Ex One Company and previously served as director of Prometal Technology for Ex One. He is the co-founder of Concurrent Technologies Corp., and he co-founded Deformation Control Technology.

Kuhn previously had joint appointments in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Material Science at Drexel University and the University of Pittsburgh.
