On Aug. 27, the Poland library hosted its Baby Brilliant event for children ages 6-23 months.

The other age groups for the 30-minute program are 2-3 and 4-5 years-old.

“We sing some songs, tell some stories, do some rhymes to kind of get them familiar with the literature and reading,” youth services librarian Mallory Wiand said.

Wiand read the books “Animal Baths,” “Animal Opposites,” “Daytime Nighttime” and “Whose Chick are You?”

The songs that were sung included “The More we get Together,” “Where is Thumbkin,” “Row Row Row Your Boat,” “Two Little Blackbirds,” “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star,” “The Grand Old Duke of York” and “If You’re Happy and you Know It”.

Candy Morgan attended the event along with her granddaughter Lillian, who was celebrating her second birthday.

“We’ve been coming to the Poland library since she was a baby,” Candy said. “We read books every week, they have a craft ready and we sing songs. It’s very wonderful.”

Wiand said doing the program gives children an early start with reading.

“They get a familiarity with written materials so it helps them to build and be better at reading as they get older,” she said. “The younger they’re exposed to it, the easier it is to get them to enjoy books.”

Morgan said attending the Baby Brilliant events has had a positive impact on Lillian.

“She was very shy,” she said. “She learns that she has a teacher she has follow directions and it follows a pattern of reading and enjoyment. She loves it now.”
