Council considers clothing box ban

GIRARD
City council brought up legislation to ban clothing-donation boxes for a second reading at its meeting this week.
The lawmakers have been considering whether to ban the boxes, which the mayor says attract debris and become eyesores.
Council introduced an ordinance banning the boxes at its first meeting this month, and that drew reaction from two of several companies that have boxes in the city.
Valerie Walker of Planet Aid’s Solon, Ohio, office, said that company has 12 boxes in Girard. Shirl Ransley of Ohio Mills Corp. said her company, which raises money for the Ohio and the Girard Special Olympics, has two boxes in the city.
“Our bins directly support the Girard Special Olympics athletes,” Ransley told council.
“There are bins placed that are unauthorized and unserviced,” she continued, “and there are good guys out there such as myself and my friend from Planet Aid. You are directly penalizing the good guys.”
“We are willing to do whatever it takes to partner with you,” Walker added. “Give us an opportunity to work with you.”
Councilman at-large Joseph Shelby asked Walker how she would feel if council had legislation that called for a maximum amount of bins or a central location.
Walker and Ransley both said they would be open to the idea.
