Police arrested a man early Saturday morning after his live-in girlfriend told them he had beat her in the head with a 20-pound dumbbell.

Police were called to a home in the 600 block of West Warren Avenue about 1:20 a.m. Saturday. When they arrived, they found a 55-year-old woman who was bleeding heavily from the head, reports said.

Reports said the woman told them she was having an argument with her boyfriend, Harold Saunders, 60, and he had punched her in the face and head and threw her belongings down the stairs.

The woman said after that he punched her again then picked up the weight and hit her with it several times, threatening to kill her, reports said. He ran away before police arrived.

When police got there they found the dumbbell, which was covered in blood, reports said. Saunders also came back to the home while police were there. He was arrested on charges of felonious assault and domestic violence and taken to the Mahoning County jail.
