Mahoning Valley unemployment numbers dropped in August

COLUMBUS — Mahoning Valley unemployment decreased by 2 percent in August compared to last year, data released by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services today showed.

Mahoning, Columbiana and Trumbull counties had a combined seasonally unadjusted jobless rate of 5.9 percent this August. Last August the rate was at 7.9 percent.

County-level numbers are not seasonally adjusted, and they do not take into account the seasonal jobs that begin and end during the summer or the holidays, for example, like the statewide numbers do.

Last month, there were a total of 15,200 unemployed in the Valley, which is a decrease of 5,400 from last August.

For the employed, there was an increase of 2,000 in the Valley last month compared to last August.

The civilian labor force did decrease by 3,000 this August.
