Steel museum invites ex-workers, families

YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown Historical Center of Industry and Labor on West Wood Street, Youngstown, is sponsoring Family Days for Youngstown Sheet and Tube, U.S. Steel and Republic Steel.

The events are free and open to all families of former mill workers. Attendees will see a vintage steel industry video, hear from speakers and reunite with former co-workers. Children can participate in hands-on activities. Special prices on museum admission will be offered.

Youngstown Sheet and Tube Day is set for noon to 2 p.m. Saturday. The U.S. Steel forum will take place from noon to 2 p.m. Oct. 4, and the Republic Steel program will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. Oct. 4. For more information, call 330-941-1314 or email yhcil@ohiohistory.org.

Mentoring program to begin at YSU

The launch of a new mentorship program for disadvantaged youths will be announced Tuesday at Youngstown State University.

The YSU-Senior Youth Mentorship Program will match community youths with adults 50 years and older, who have strong educational backgrounds, possess colorful life experiences and have successful professional careers. The goal is to create opportunities for disadvantaged youths by furthering their education, vocational and skills training to enhance their employability.

The program is funded by a $13,875 grant from the Youngstown Foundation, YSU and the Centofanti Foundation and is a collaborative effort among the university, Safehouse Residential Services, Big Brothers and Big Sisters and Eastern Gateway Community College.

Newton gets grant

NEWTON FALLS

A grant of $100,000 has been approved by the Appalachian Regional Commission for the second phase of the Scott Street, Newton Township, sewer project.

ARC is a federal-state partnership focused on economic development in the 13 Appalachian states.

The project will provide sewer systems for 112 households and one manufacturing facility, according to U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Cleveland, who announced the grant.
