Dancing for a cause: Competition will net $1K for victor’s charity

The Black and White Gala presented by the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber and the American Red Cross of the Mahoning Valley will feature local business people and others for a dancing competition Oct. 18.

The competition will take place at Stambaugh Auditorium, 1000 Fifth Ave., and the winner will take home the mirror-ball trophy and $1,000 for a charity of the winner’s choice.

Chamber starts ’14 membership event

SALEM

The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce started its 2014 membership campaign in the latter part of August. The last campaign was in 2004.

Letters were sent out to potential new members with information on the benefits of being a chamber member along with information on membership offers.

Parker Hannifin division to open polymer center

RAVENNA

Parker Hannifin’s Parflex division will officially open the doors of its Polymer Innovation Center in Ravenna on Oct. 2 as part of an investment from Ohio’s Third Frontier program.

The center, which is expected to create more than 30 high-tech and manufacturing jobs, will look for new uses for polymer tubing and hoses for medical devices/life sciences applications, as well as other various applications including oil and gas, automotive and environmental.

The Ohio Manufacturers’ Association 2014 Ohio Manufacturing Counts study shows facts about the Mahoning Valley’s manufacturing.

Mahoning County’s manufacturing employment accounted for 7.4 percent of its total employment as of 2012; Trumbull County’s manufacturing employment was 15.2 percent; and Columbiana County’s was 13.9 percent that year.

Workforce training funds are available

COLUMBUS

The Ohio Development Services Agency announced a program that makes $29.4 million available in fiscal year 2015 for employers to enhance the skills of their employees.

Training for high-demand fields such as advanced manufacturing and aerospace and aviation are eligible for the reimbursement program.

Applications are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis by submitting the online application beginning at 10 a.m. Sept. 30.
