POLICE CALLS

A summary of recent criminal activity in Poland and Boardman townships:

POLAND

Sept. 11

Theft: An undisclosed sum of money was stolen from a Center Road fast-food restaurant.

Sept. 13

Criminal damaging: A plastic mailbox sustained damage in the 3100 block of Olde Winter Trail.

Recovered property: Two firearms were found near an apartment in the 2500 block of Stoner Avenue.

Sept. 15

Recovered property: Money and other items were recovered after police had responded to residential burglaries and car break-ins on Bedford, New Castle and Stewart roads.

Sept. 16

Harassment: A Struthers Road woman filed a complaint stating she had been harassed.

BOARDMAN

Sept. 12

Arrest: A traffic stop on South Avenue led to 34-year-old John J. Grzejka’s arrest. Grzejka, of Sherwood Avenue, Youngstown, was wanted on a warrant charging failure to appear in court.

Arrest: Police took into custody 21-year-old Carlos J. Powe Jr. of Struthers Road, Campbell, while responding to possible threats at a Boardman-Poland Road fast-food restaurant. Powe was wanted on a felony probation-violation charge from Summit County.

Breaking and entering: Someone entered a storage unit in the 900 block of Pearson Circle and damaged a door frame.

Theft: Lylianette Rojas, 42, of Breaden Street, Youngstown, was picked up on a warrant accusing her of stealing about $300 worth of clothing Aug. 26 from Sears in Southern Park Mall.

Vandalism: A van in the 1300 block of Doral Drive was found with all its tires slashed. Damage came to $800.

Arrest: Youngstown police relinquished custody of Salimah Z. Elamin of Winona Drive, Youngstown, to township authorities. The 34-year-old Elamin was wanted on charges of resisting arrest and obstructing official business related to an Aug. 23 incident at the Southern Park Mall in which police alleged she had caused a scene and refused to follow their commands.

Arrest: After receiving information about a possibly injured person at a Market Street business, authorities charged 46-year-old Xiu T. Li with obstructing official business after alleging Li, of Ferncliff Avenue, Boardman, went into the business and ignored officers’ commands to stay put. A man was found with blood on him, though Li faced no further charges, a report showed.

Sept. 13

Arrest: Authorities answered a call regarding suspicious activity near U.S. Route 224 and Tippecanoe Road before arresting Edward W. Lanigan, 60, of North Park Avenue, Warren. Lanigan was wanted on a felony Trumbull County warrant charging escape as well as on a misdemeanor assault charge from Warren Municipal Court.

Criminal damaging: Two Youngstown boys, 15 and 16, were accused of doing roughly $700 in damage to a vehicle’s hood at the Southern Park Mall.

Theft: Shavell R. Blackmon, 18, of Ferncliff Avenue, Boardman, and Timothy M. Underwood, 22, of Douglas Avenue, Youngstown, faced theft and child-endangerment charges after 31 articles of clothing valued at $665 were stolen from the J.C. Penney store in Southern Park Mall. Also, a 10-month-old baby was used in the commission of the crime, police alleged.

Theft: A Struthers boy, 16, was accused of stealing a $79 cellphone case from Walmart, 1300 Doral Drive.

Drugs: Acting on a search warrant, authorities arrested 34-year-old Wesley A. Pierce Jr. of Lemans Drive, Boardman, on felony charges of trafficking in heroin and cocaine possession as well as on a misdemeanor charge of possession of drug paraphernalia. Contraband found included two folded dollar bills containing suspected heroin and cocaine, a digital scale with suspected drug residue and two cut straws, something that’s common in drug use, a report said.

Sept. 14

Arrest: Michael C. Matthews of East Clark Street, East Palestine, was charged with obstructing official business after officers responded to a report of two people having entered a vacant home in the 500 block of Pierce Drive. They were to do work on the residence, but Matthews, 42, fled from police on foot and hampered their investigation, a report stated.

Criminal damaging: A vehicle in the 300 block of Erskine Avenue had dents placed in its front hood.

Burglary: A man claiming to have been hired to perform yard work reportedly tricked the homeowner into allowing him to enter the residence in the 500 block of West Glen Drive, where a $50 weather station and roughly $450 were missing.

Domestic violence: Monique R. Perez, 24, of Tyrell Street, Youngstown, was charged with the crime after her father, of West Boulevard, alleged Perez had thrown a floor mirror and struck his face and left eye during an argument. The accuser had a red mark near his eye.

Theft: A man stole a $58 carton of cigarettes from Walgreens Pharmacy, 7295 Market St.

Unauthorized use of a vehicle: Struthers authorities handed to Boardman police 47-year-old John L. Hopkins of Bassett Lane, Youngstown. He faced a charge of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle after a Dec. 12, 2011, incident in which a township woman alleged Hopkins had borrowed but refused to return her car.

Sept. 15

Arrest: A 14-year-old girl was arrested at Boardman Center Middle School, 7410 Market St., on an apprehension order from the Martin P. Joyce Juvenile Justice Center in Youngstown. The original charge was domestic violence.

Counterfeit: A fake $10 bill was discovered at Movies 8, 469 Boardman-Poland Road.

Fraud: A Mill Creek Boulevard couple told officers a caller claiming to be their grandson urged them to send him $3,500 after saying he had been in an accident in Las Vegas. Afterward, a Walmart employee warned them it was a scam and not to wire any money, a police report showed.

Theft: Marquis C. Garrett, 20, of West Ravenwood Avenue, Youngstown, and Tanisha B. Robbins, 37, of East Philadelphia Avenue, Youngstown, were charged with taking several flat-screen TVs and video games from Walmart.

Theft: The right front turn signal was removed from a motorcycle in the 5600 block of Southern Boulevard.

Vandalism: Someone spray-painted graffiti on a wall and a nearby trash bin at a Market Street furniture store.

Harassment: An Applewood Boulevard woman said she’s gotten nearly daily unwanted calls.

Identity theft: A Hubbard woman reported she was informed of a $500 unauthorized withdrawal to her account at a Doral Drive big-box store.

Harassment: A worker for a Southern Park Mall store said a former employee had sent her eight unwanted text messages.

Theft: A woman noticed her purse and car keys missing from a locker at a U.S. Route 224 fitness center.

Theft/vandalism: Someone broke a window to and removed an AM/FM/compact-disc player from a Jeep at a Boardman-Poland Road car dealership.

Sept. 16

Arrest: Authorities near McKay Court conducted a vehicle-registration check before taking into custody 34-year-old Erica R. Kirby of Brownlee Avenue, Youngstown. She was wanted on a Brown County, Ohio, warrant charging her with failure to appear in court.

Attempted burglary: A resident discovered a 3-inch cut to a window screen after someone had apparently tried to enter the home in the 7400 block of Glenwood Avenue.

Breaking and entering: Someone broke into a residence in the 200 block of Oakley Avenue before cutting and removing copper piping from the basement.

Harassment: A Boardman-Canfield Road woman reported having received 32 such calls, as well as several unwanted text messages.

Identity fraud: A Turnberry Drive man learned that someone had used his Social Security number without consent to file an income-tax return.

Recovered property: Twenty-five items valued at $976 were recovered after having been stolen from Walmart.

Theft: Sharon L. Ritter, 39, was charged in the theft of $40 worth of merchandise, including steaks, from Walmart. Ritter, of Sheridan Road, Youngstown, also was wanted on a Trumbull County warrant charging her with a probation violation.

Theft/criminal damaging: A woman took and damaged $77 worth of merchandise belonging to Family Dollar, 4030 South Ave.

Harassment: A Glenwood Avenue woman reported her former boyfriend sent and made threatening text messages and calls to her.

Theft: A Nellbert Lane woman discovered four chairs missing after she had a garage sale at her home.

Trespassing: Police charged Donald E. Bailey of West Philadelphia Avenue, Youngstown, with criminal trespassing after alleging the 51-year-old Bailey was at Home Depot, 7001 Southern Blvd., in violation of a Sept. 8 criminal-trespassing warning.

Sept. 17

Arrest: A vehicle registration check on Route 224 led to the arrest of 37-year-old Stephanie A. Wright of South Avenue, Boardman, on a charge of violating a protection order after an Aug. 2 situation in which she was accused of being at a Boardman-Canfield Road grocery store in violation of the order.

Burglary: Took place in the 1400 block of Country Club Avenue. Stolen were a 2-liter bottle of soda and a 12-ounce can of soda.

Domestic violence: A 15-year-old Boardman girl was charged after her mother alleged the teen threw cat litter at and struck the accuser with a pool cue during an argument related to discipline matters.

Vandalism: Someone spray-painted the rear of a building that houses an insurance business in the 4400 block of Market Street.

Theft: A woman stole 25 undergarments and two pairs of yoga pants from Pink, a clothing store in the Southern Park Mall.

Theft: Authorities apprehended 20-year-old Timothy D. Banks and charged him with theft, obstructing official business and possession of drug-abuse instruments and criminal tools after four pairs of shoes were stolen from Dick’s Sporting Goods, 550 Boardman-Poland Road. Banks, of Campbell Street, Youngstown, also ran from police and had a hypodermic needle, a report showed.

Harassment: An Argyle Avenue woman said a family friend made and sent such calls and text messages, including a threat to shoot at the accuser’s residence, because she did not wish to date him.

Auto theft: A 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix was stolen from an apartment building in the 4800 block of Erie Street.

Assault: A Struthers woman told police that a woman in her 40s grabbed the accuser near the stomach area at an East Midlothian Boulevard gas station.

Harassment: A woman said she got five such calls while driving near Southern Boulevard and Indianola Road.

Sept. 18

Harassment: A Maple Avenue man told police he received an email in which the author threatened to defame his character and embarrass him.
