MINERAL RIDGE

Bids for repairs and a new electrical system for the old middle school are expected to be in by mid-October, schools Superintendent Damon Dohar told the Weathersfield Board of Education.

Plans are to raze a portion of the former middle school on state Route 46 as the final part of the $25.5 million Ohio School Facilities Commission project.

The estimated demolition cost is slightly more than $1 million, Dohar said at Wednesday’s board meeting.

Bids are for the additional work that will be needed at the old middle school, which includes a new outdoor electrical system and renovation of the cafeteria into central storage area.

Some construction will be needed in both locations, since the remainder of the building will be torn down.

The high school, now a junior-senior high school and Seaborn Elementary, were extensively remodeled, including additions and new sections.

The state’s portion of the project was $17.8 million with a local share of $6.9 million to $7 million, which includes a $529,139 locally funded initiative to build a new gymnasium at the high school for the junior high.

The board approved first reading of a new change or addition to the district’s policy manual, which will allow use of certain electronic communications equipment by students for educational purposes.

“It will be up to the teachers to decide if the device brought in is suitable for the education process,” he said.
