Canfield council approves 8 ordinances
CANFIELD
Canfield City Council approved $313,582 worth of adjustments to its annual budget Wednesday night, including $20,000 to fix broken headstones in Canfield Village Cemetery.
City Manager Joseph Warino said most of the budget changes were made possible as a result of grant money.
Council also approved an ordinance to create a fund for the North Broad Street safety upgrade, Phase 3. Warino said Phase 2 was completed in the spring and he hopes Phase 3 is completed next July.
All three phases cost $850,000, with $714,000 of that amount provided by a grant from the Ohio Public Works Commission.
During the public comment session, city resident Frank Micchia, 76, reminded residents about two proposed charter amendments on the November ballot. The first would enable residents to comment on measures before any final vote by council, he said. The second would require the finance director, police chief, zoning inspector and public utilities director to attend council meetings.
“Citizens expect transparency and accountability, which is what I want in our government,” Micchia said.
Most council members said they opposed Micchia’s proposals.
“I think [Micchia] paints a black picture of how government works in this city,” said Councilman John Morvay. “[It has] worked for 100 years in this city, so there’s no reason to change it.”
Warino announced a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Canfield Library at 11:30 a.m. Oct. 3 at 43. W. Main St., and noted that the speaker for the Regional Chamber’s Oct. 3 Good Morning will be an Ohio Department of Transportation representative commenting on the Route 11 and U.S. Route 224 improvements.
Warino also reminded residents that the city’s trick-or-treat date will be moved to 6 to 8 p.m. Nov. 1 to avoid conflict with the Canfield vs. Poland football game Oct. 31. He noted that Poland and Canfield Township also moved their dates to Nov. 1.
