The city will have a public forum next month to talk about the benefits of having one garbage hauler, said Dan Livingston, safety-service director.

Livingston also said at city council’s Monday meeting that at a bid opening Aug. 31, Republic Services of Youngstown had the lowest and best out of three bids for monthly garbage pickup that includes recycling once every other week for $14.10.

Garbage haulers that are in the city now, which are down to three, he said, range from $15 to $16 a month, and that does not include recycling.

Senior citizens would get a 15 percent discount, he said, meaning they would only pay $11.99 a month.

If the city decides to go with one hauler and awarded a contract to Republic Services, it would have an exclusive contract, Livingston said.

People would not be forced to use the service, but they would not be allowed to bring their own company in to the city.

He said there are definitely benefits to having only one garbage hauler.

“We’re getting a better price and a better service,” he said. “And you’ll only hear garbage trucks on your street once a week.”

The companies in the city now have pickup on different days.

Livingston said he hasn’t picked a date for the public meeting on the single-hauler proposal.

A representative of Republic Services will be there, he said.
