Strict dress code nets detentions at NY school

NEW YORK (AP) — A strict new dress code adopted by a Staten Island school has resulted in several detentions in the last two weeks.

A city Department of Education spokeswoman said today that five students received detention and a number of students were spoken to by school administrators following the new “Dress for Success policy at Tottenville High School.

Department spokeswoman Marge Feinberg says it is the first year the dress code was implemented. She didn’t say how many students were spoken to about the new policy.

The code covers everything from tank tops and short-shorts to hoodies and sunglasses.

District 31 Superintendent Aimee Horowitz told the New York Post that skimpy clothing is banned because it “interferes with the learning and teaching process.”
