Bond set for suspect

YOUNGSTOWN

Bond has been set at $1 million for the suspect in a Saturday-night homicide on the South Side.

Keith Sims, 25, of Ford Avenue, was arraigned in municipal court Wednesday on a charge of murder before Magistrate Anthony Sertick. He turned himself in to police Monday evening.

Sims is charged in the death of 23-year-old Shaniece Wells of Maplewood Court, who died after being shot at an 884 E. Boston Ave. home about 11:20 p.m. Police said Wells was part of a group of people who went to the home to confront Sims after he got into an argument with another man, and she was shot when the group was leaving.

Sims is in the Mahoning County jail.

Crash victim identified

GIRARD

Girard police identified a woman who died in a one-car accident on North State Street on Tuesday afternoon.

Lenora C. Brown, 53, of 307 Mosier Road in Girard was traveling south when she lost control, struck the curb and guardrail, crossed in front of a vehicle in the passing lane, traveled across the northbound lanes, through a small grassy lot and struck a vacant building at 1015 N. State St.

Police said they haven’t determined a cause.

Columbarium to open

YOUNGSTOWN

Tod Homestead Cemetery will open a new Columbarium Memorial Garden, a $700,000 investment in the North Side landmark, on Friday.

The cemetery was established in 1908 under terms of the will of George Tod, son of Ohio’s Civil War governor, David Tod. Tod family members David Tod II and Sallie Tod Dutton will be present at 4 p.m. Friday to cut the ribbon and mark the occasion of the opening of the garden at 2200 Belmont Ave., across from Dairy Queen.

The new facility at the cemetery has 960 spaces for cremated remains, responding to a new trend in cremation. The memorial garden will offer a new space for reflection near an entrance arch. Area funeral directors will attend the event.

Robbery reported

WARREN

A 28-year-old resident of Stone Gate Apartments, 1280 Robert Ave. NW, reported being robbed at gunpoint in the parking lot of the apartment complex at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The man said he was standing in the parking lot when two males walked up and asked him to use a cigarette lighter. As he reached for the lighter, one of the men held a handgun to the back of his head. The other male pointed a gun at his face.

They demanded money, but a car approached them, and the suspects ran away without getting anything. Both males appeared to be about 16 years old, the victim said.

Victim’s father makes donation to mission

WARREN

Richard C. Rollison III, whose son, Richard Rollison IV, was shot to death a year ago at a Warren gas station, donated 350 hot dogs and buns to the Rescue Mission of the Mahoning Valley on Wednesday.

The elder Rollison organized the Richard C. Rollison IV Peace Walk on Sunday from Courthouse Square to Perkins Park, which included speakers, food, a disc jockey, toys, cotton-candy and games.

The hot dogs and buns were left over from Sunday’s event.

Woman says shots were fired at car

YOUNGSTOWN

A 38-year-old woman said someone fired a shot at her car just before 6 p.m. Tuesday on a South Side street.

The woman told police she was at the light at East Lucius Avenue and Erie Street when a man in the back seat of a car in a nearby driveway got out and began yelling at her.

Reports said the woman told officers she was scared, and she drove away on Erie Street, and the man fired a shot at her car and shattered the glass in her back window. The woman was not injured, reports said. Reports said the woman told officers she had never seen the man before and did not know why he was angry with her.

Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership will continue its neighborhood meetings next week in the Southeast and Northeast areas.

The meetings will take place noon and 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Mahoning Valley Hope Center, 3217 Surrey Road SE; 6 p.m. Nov. 11 at Friendship Baptist Church, 1954 Brier Street SW; and 6 p.m. Nov. 10 and 6 p.m. Nov. 12, both at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 1947 E. Market St.

Huntington Bank will present a $5,000 check at 2 p.m. Friday at 645 Mercer St. NE to Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership for implementation of the side-lot incentive program.

The program allows eligible residents who have purchased a side lot from the Trumbull County Land Bank to receive a $250 gift card to Lowe’s to buy supplies for improvements to the side lot. Lowe’s provides an additional 10 percent discount.

Ribbon-cutting set

CHAMPION

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at 1 p.m. Nov. 14 at the back of Trumbull Career and Technical Center on Research Parkway in Champion.

The ribbon-cutting is for the third phase of the Western Reserve Greenway bike trail, which runs 2.2 miles from Champion Avenue East in Champion to North River Road in Warren.

Cats revived after fire

YOUNGSTOWN

Reports said firefighters and paramedics were able to revive three cats found in a kitchen fire at a 529 Parkcliffe Ave. just before 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Firefighters were called after the homeowner said she was cooking something, turned the stove off, and the oven blew up, reports said. Reports said the home was full of clutter, and there were six cats inside and three of them ran out.

The other cats were found in the cellar suffering from smoke inhalation but were able to be revived, reports said. The Red Cross is helping the two women who live there with living arrangements, reports said.

Reports said there was a leak in a natural-gas line to the stove which caused the fire. Damage is listed at $2,500. There were no injuries.

Rifle reported stolen

CAMPBELL

A Princess Street resident reported to police that a firearm had been stolen from his residence about a week ago. Both a Remington Model 760 hunting rifle and its BSA scope are missing from the home.

The resident said he did not notice the rifle and scope missing until he was preparing for a hunting trip Tuesday. Police advised the resident find the rifle’s serial number so the detective’s division can investigate the case.

11th suspension charge

YOUNGSTOWN

Police cited a man for his 11th driving-under-suspension charge on the West Side on Tuesday evening.

Officers pulled over a car driven by 29-year-old Rodrick Johnson of Edwards Avenue at Glenellen and Connecticut avenues about 7:25 p.m. for having an obscured license plate. They found Johnson already has 10 open suspensions on his license. Johnson was cited for driving under suspension and given a court date.

Thief reportedly wore mismatched shoes

YOUNGSTOWN

A man wearing one black shoe and one red shoe got away with cash from a Lincoln Knolls drugstore during a robbery about 8:35 p.m. Tuesday.

Officers were called to the Walgreens at 2864 McCartney Road, where an employee told them a man dressed in black with his face covered walked in with mismatched shoes and demanded money. The man acted as if he had a gun, but the employee never saw a weapon, reports said.

The robber grabbed an undetermined amount of cash from the register, reports said.
