Girls soccer: Mooney advances, Canfield eliminated

Juliana Vazquez had a hat trick, Elizabeth Philibin scored two goals and goalie Samantha Ellis recorded a shutout to lead Cardinal Mooney to a 6-0 victory over Rootstown in a Division III soccer regional semifinal Tuesday night.

The Cardinals beat the Rovers at Brecksville-Broadview Heights to reach a regional final against Elyria Catholic at 3 p.m. on Saturday at Nordonia High School.

Mooney is trying to become the first girls soccer team from the Mahoning Valley to qualify for the state tournament.

Canfield took Mentor Lake Catholic to overtime in a Division II regional semifinal at Brush High School in Lyndhurst, but the Cougars scored the lone goal of the match in the sudden-death period for a 1-0 victory.
