Two goals from Tenis puts YSU past Vikings

Youngstown

Brittany Tenis scored two goals, including the game-winner with 1:29 left in regulation to lead the Youngstown State women’s soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Cleveland State on Wednesday evening at Farmers National Bank Field. Following a corner kick by Katie Hohmann and a scrum in the middle of the box, Tenis attempted a shot that was blocked. On the rebound, the senior from Flint, Mich., found an opening through a pack of both teammates and defenders and slid the game-winning goal into the lower-left corner of the net. With the win, the Penguins improve to 7-6-2 overall and 3-2-1 in the Horizon League. The Penguins also finish unbeaten at home (6-0-2).

UNC disciplines nine workers after scandal

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.

University of North Carolina chancellor Carol Folt says the school has fired or begun disciplinary procedures against nine employees after an investigation of an academic fraud scandal dating back nearly two decades.

Folt took questions from reporters Wednesday after the release of the report by former U.S. Justice Department official Kenneth Wainstein. Folt says four people are being terminated. She wouldn’t say who they were.

Wainstein’s probe found more than 3,100 students — nearly half of them athletes — enrolled in classes they didn’t have to show up for and received artificially inflated grades for research papers. The report called it a “shadow curriculum” that ran from 1993 to 2011 in the former African and Afro-American Studies department.

The Cavaliers, who played without LeBron James, were led by 16 points from Kyrie Irving, while starting backcourt mate Dion Waiters added 15 points. Kevin Love finished with 12, while Joe Harris added 10 off the Cleveland bench.

The loss was only the second of the preseason for Cleveland, which finished its exhibition season with a 5-2 record.

Polian, Wolf nominated for Hall of Fame

CANTON

Former general managers Bill Polian and Ron Wolf were selected Wednesday as contributor finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s class of 2015.

Polian and Wolf were chosen by the Hall of Fame’s contributor committee. Inductees will be selected on Jan. 31, the day before the Super Bowl, in Phoenix.

Polian was the GM for the Bills when they made four consecutive Super Bowls, and for the Colts when they won the championship in 2006.

Wolf won a Super Bowl while general manager of the Packers in 1996, and also was a longtime player personnel director for the Raiders.

Correction

Walsh Jesuit volleyball player Christine Morgan hit the ball out of bounds on the final play in Canfield’s Division I victory on Tuesday in Stow. A story in Wednesday’s edition incorrectly said Carolyn Bauer made the final hit.
