Staff report

Jim Tressel, now Youngs-town State University’s president, is on the College Football Hall of Fame ballot for possible induction for his accomplishments during 15 seasons with the Penguins.

The National Football Foundation (NFF) & College Hall of Fame announced Wednesday the names on the 2015 ballot, including 75 players and six coaches from the Football Bowl Subdivision and 87 players and 25 coaches from the divisional ranks.

Tressel coached the YSU football team from 1986-2000. His Penguins won four Division I-AA national championships (1991, ’93, ’94 and ’97) and appeared in two other title games (1993, ’99). YSU qualified for the playoffs 10 times in Tressel’s 15 seasons.

Tressel moved on to Ohio State in 2001 and coaches the Buckeyes through the 2010 season. His 2002 team won the BCS national championships and he coached two other Ohio State teams (2006, ’07) to the title game.

Tressel’s Buckeyes won six Big Ten Conference championships. He coaced 73 first-team All-Americans during his career. He is a two-time Eddie Robinson National Coach of the Year, winning one at the FBS and one at the FCS level. Tressel’s career with the Buckeyes ended with his resignation after the 2010 season after a tattoo and memorabilia scandal involving several players.

Tressel later became a vice president at the University of Akron and was appointed YSU’s president this summer.
