Ohio man convicted in sledgehammer slayings

Wednesday, October 22, 2014

AKRON, Ohio (AP) — A jury has convicted a 20-year-old northeast Ohio man of killing his girlfriend’s parents with a sledgehammer and will consider whether to recommend the death penalty or life in prison.

Shawn Ford Jr. was convicted today in Akron of aggravated murder and other charges in the April 2013 deaths of Margaret and Jeffrey Schobert of New Franklin.

The slayings occurred 10 days after Ford stabbed and critically injured the Schoberts’ daughter, Chelsea, because she had refused him sex. Prosecutors say Ford and a 14-year-old boy took a sledgehammer from the couple’s garage and beat them to death. Prosecutors say Ford was angry that the Schoberts wouldn’t let him visit Chelsea at the hospital.

The juvenile, now 15, will be tried as an adult.
