Coroner: 6 fire victims died of smoke inhalation

Four children and two adults killed in a suburban house fire died of acute smoke and fume inhalation, according to autopsy results released Sunday.

Investigators have not identified the cause of Saturday’s fire, which killed a recently married woman, her four young children and her disabled father-in-law.

The Allegheny County medical examiner’s office identified the victims as Hope Jordan, 27; Dominic Jordan, 7; Autumn Jordan, 6; Serenity Jakub, 3; Victoria Jordan, 2; and Ronald Egenlauf Sr., 55.

Previously, family members had identified the youngest victim as Victoria Jakub. They also gave Egenlauf’s age as 56.

The sole survivor of the McKeesport blaze, Hope Jordan’s husband, Keith Egenlauf, 23, remained hospitalized in critical condition. Relatives said he was burned over 55 percent of his body.

Sweeney Chevrolet Buick GMC is asking the public to narrow a list of five local charities to two that will benefit from the car dealership’s Operation Santa Claus.

Now through Oct. 31, Sweeney is urging the public to vote by going to www.sweeneycars.com/vote once a day. The finalist charities are United Way, Rescue Mission of the Mahoning Valley, Angels for Animals, Boys and Girls Club of Youngstown and Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign of Mahoning County. Sweeney will donate $50 to the winning charities for every new vehicle it sells between Nov. 15 and Dec. 31.

Last year, Sweeney gave a combined total of more than $20,000 to Salvation Army and Boys and Girls Club. This year’s goal is $30,000, said Doug Sweeney, dealership president.

Fleming to join YMHA

Mayor John A. McNally has appointed Suzanne Fleming of Youngstown to the Board of Commissioners of the Youngstown Metropolitan Housing Authority. Fleming is retired from Youngstown State University’s Center for Human Services Development and now serves on the boards of the Raymond John Wean Foundation and First National Bank.

She has an associate’s degree in nursing and a bachelor’s degree in sociology, both from YSU, and a master’s degree in public administration from Kent State University.

Lottery tickets stolen

Police have issued an arrest warrant for Mary Jo Rickard, 25, of West Third Street, on one count of theft, alleging she stole lottery tickets from the McQuaid’s store, 501 Vienna Ave., while filling out a job application Wednesday.

A clerk heard the sound of the tickets being ripped, then Rickard fled, but dropped one of the tickets on the floor. The incident was captured on the store’s video surveillance system, and an officer identified Rickard from previous incidents.

Rickard also left behind her name, address, birthday and Social Security number, police said in a post on its Facebook page. The tickets were voided by the Ohio Lottery.

Rickard has 20 previous cases through Niles Municipal Court dating back to 2010, including convictions for possessing drug paraphernalia, receiving stolen property and assault.

Bistro opens at MCCTC

The student-opened restaurant, The Bistro at Mahoning County Career and Technical Center, 7300 N. Palmyra Road, will open for lunch hours to the public beginning Nov. 4.

The Bistro will be open Tuesdays through Thursdays from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for dine-in or carry out through the spring. Customers may pre-order meals by calling 330-729-4000, ext. 1506.

The Bistro is run by students enrolled in the MCCTC Culinary Arts Program. Several new additions have been added to the menu of freshly prepared soups, salads, sandwiches, entrees and desserts.

All food is prepared by students under the supervision of Matt Putzier, chef and culinary arts instructor.

Christmas parade

All Columbiana Christmas Parade participants are asked to begin to line up at 5 p.m. Nov. 21 at Joshua Dixon Elementary School, 333 N. Middle St.

Due to increased concerns of heavy traffic and low lighting in the lineup location last year, committee chairman Paul Rance made the decision to return the lineup and subsequent parade route back to Joshua Dixon school. With the assistance and cooperation from the city police department, the parade will leave from Joshua Dixon at 6:30 p.m. and head south on Main Street to Union Street.

The chamber invites the public to bring your organization’s message to Columbiana.

Taking applications

WARREN

Applications are being accepted for the Warren Police Department’s next Citizen’s Police Awareness Academy Training class planned to begin on an unspecified date in November.

Classes will take place Mondays from 6 to 9 p.m. in the roll-call room of the police department.

Residents can obtain an application from the city’s website (www.warren.org) or by stopping at the Warren Police Department Records Department at 141 South St. from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

During the six-week course, residents receive an overview of police policies and procedures, tour of the county jail, take a police ride-along, receive training on use of deadly force in a “shoot, not shoot” simulated scenario and hear remarks from city administrators, police chief and others.

Training classes began in 2011.
