Columbus

The Canfield High School doubles team of Ashley Kaleel and Hannah Cianciola were eliminated in the first round of the girls Division I state tennis tournament in Columbus on Friday.

Victoria Chang and Rhiannon James of Dublin Jerome defeated the Canfield girls in three sets.

After winning the opening set 6-1, Kaleel and Cianciola dropped the second set in a tiebreak 7-6 (7-3) and were finished off in the decisive third set, 6-3.

Kaleel, a junior, and Cianciola, a sophomore, presumably will have another crack at winning a state title next season. They lost in the second round last year.

One of the area’s top doubles teams all season long, they stumbled on the final day of the sectional tournament, forcing them to earn a trip to Columbus the hard way.

But Kaleel and Cianciola recovered to win the Northeast district and earn one of the top four seeds in this weekend’s state tournament.

Chang and James were the fourth seed from Central/East/Southeast district.
