TOLEDO
Three baby Galapagos tortoises are settling into their new home at the Toledo Zoo.
The three arrived at the zoo earlier this month from a zoo in Brownsville, Texas.
But they won’t be ready for their public debut in Toledo for another six weeks or so.
All three weigh less than a pound each and their shells measure only about 4 inches across.
That’s in stark contrast to the zoo’s Galapagos tortoise that tops out at 440 pounds and is estimated to be 100 years old.
A Toledo Zoo official tells The Blade newspaper that the zoo plans to build a breeding program with the tortoises that’s part of a long-term commitment to make sure that the zoo continues to have Galapagos tortoises.
