YOUNGSTOWN

Jerusalem Baptist Church, 2003 Wilson Ave., will mark its 97th anniversary Sunday.

The Rev. Torrence Green of Atlanta will speak at the 11 a.m. service. Bishop Emmitt Nevels of Nevels Temple Church of God in Christ will speak at 4 p.m.

The Rev. D.H. Anderson is pastor; Gladys Williams is chairwoman.

Pastor to retire

BOARDMAN

The Rev. Fred A. Mayhew, founding pastor of Trinity Fellowship Church, 4749 South Ave., is retiring after 30 years of ministry.

A banquet honoring the pastor will be Saturday at The Georgetown.

The Rev. Mr. Mayhew and his wife, Lynn Brett, founded the church in September 1984. The nondenominational church began services at Wilson High School and later bought property on South Avenue to build the church.

Mr. Mayhew was involved with Greater Youngstown Coalition of Christians and Youngstown Christian School. He founded “Lamb’s House,” a halfway house for men with substance-abuse issues, and it later became Ohio Valley Teen Challenge.

Mr. Mayhew will remain at the church as pastor emeritus and serve in a volunteer capacity. Dr. A.J. Platt of Poland, the executive pastor, will succeed Mr. Mayhew as pastor.

Holiday event

POLAND

Beatitude House will host “Christmas at the Lake” from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 14 at The Lake Club, 1140 Paulin Road, Poland.

The family event will include a catered brunch and a variety of holiday activities for children, including ornament making, letters to Santa and cookie decorating as well as an adult silent auction and children’s ticket auction.

All proceeds benefit the families of Beatitude House.

Advance reservations are required. Tickets are $30 for adults, $15 for children and free for children 3 and under.

There is limited seating available. Visit beatitudehouse.com/events or call 330-744-3147 to reserve seats. Tickets will be on sale until Monday.

Christmas event

BOARDMAN

Boardman Park will host a Community Christmas event from 4 to 6 p.m. Dec. 7.

Participants can bring natural decorations such as popcorn strings or pine cones covered in peanut butter to adorn one of the park’s pine trees.

Santa will make an appearance at 4:20 p.m., Christmas music and caroling will begin at 4:30 p.m., and the lighting of the Community Christmas Tree will take place at 4:45 p.m.

All activities are free and will take place near the gazebo and St. James Meeting House.

The park administration will accept donations of canned goods for Second Harvest Food Bank.

Homeless Walk

YOUNGSTOWN

The seventh annual Homeless Walk, kickoff for Help Hotline Crisis Center’s 2014-15 Cold Weather Emergency Shelter Program, will begin at 9 a.m. Monday at St. Vincent DePaul Dining Hall, 208 W. Front St., and end at the Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley, 962 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.
