SHARON

Sharon Regional Health System hosted its annual Volunteer Awards Luncheon Oct. 21 with honors going to Rita Vogt, who was named the Janet L. Patterson Volunteer of the Year, and Ann Souzer, the Hospice Volunteer Award for 10 years of service.

Vogt, who volunteers at Sharon Regional’s Cancer Care Center, received the award from Michelle Schmader, performance improvement coordinator. A volunteer who exemplifies enthusiasm, service and dedication to the volunteer program receives the annual award. Erin Zanhiser, hospice volunteer coordinator, presented the Hospice award.

John Davidson, vice president of human resources, welcomed volunteers and thanked them for their service to the health system during the gathering in Morrison Hall of the E.J. O’Meara Health Education Building.

Joanne Bisson, secretary of the auxiliary management board, provided a history of Sharon Regional Auxiliary, which was established in 1928 and has donated more than $1.8 million to the hospital. The funds were used for facility improvements and to buy advanced medical equipment.

Schmader recognized the deaths this year of three longtime volunteers. Alyce D. Parrish provided 51 years of service to SRHS, most notably with her leadership in the Angel Fund and the auxiliary. Alma Cullen was a 17-year volunteer who helped in the Women’s Center and coordinated many fundraisers. Maury Keaveny served for 16 years in the surgical family waiting room and as a patient escort.
