‘Dumb and Dumber To’ tops box office

NEW YORK

At the movies, idiocy never goes out of style.

Twenty years after the 1994 original, “Dumb and Dumber To” opened with $38.1 million at the weekend box office, according to studio estimates Sunday. The Universal sequel debuted almost exactly two decades after the Farrelly brothers first introduced the Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels low-IQ duo.

“Dumb and Dumber To” edged out the animated Disney adventure “Big Hero 6,” which took in $36 million in its second week. Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi epic “Interstellar” slid to third in its second week with an estimated $29.2 million.

Rounding out the top five were “Beyond the Lights,” $6.5 million, fourth place; and “Gone Girl,” $4.6 million, fifth place.

Lawyer: Cosby won’t address old claims

LOS ANGELES

Bill Cosby will not dignify “decade-old, discredited” claims of sexual abuse with a response, his attorney said Sunday, the first comment from the famed comedian’s lawyer on an increasing uproar over allegations that he assaulted several women in the past.

In a statement released to The Associated Press and posted online, lawyer John P. Schmitt said the fact that the allegations are being repeated “does not make them true.”

“He would like to thank all his fans for the outpouring of support and assure them that, at age 77, he is doing his best work,” Schmitt said.

Cosby, who was never criminally charged in any case, settled a civil suit in 2006 with a woman over a purported incident two years before.

He stonewalled National Public Radio host Scott Simon in an interview that aired this weekend with Cosby and his wife, Camille, about their African-American art collection.

Cosby also declined to comment when asked by the AP about the allegations last week in Washington, where the Smithsonian Institution was opening an exhibit on the collection.

Cosby postponed indefinitely an AP interview scheduled for this week. It had been intended to discuss an upcoming Netflix project.

He had standup performances scheduled, including one Sunday night in Erie, Pa., and is to perform at Packard Music Hall in Warren on March 13.
