A drug sweep Friday morning during a state-mandated safety drill at the Campbell School District’s elementary-middle school campus turned up a marijuana pipe in a 12-year-old’s locker.

A police report says the department’s dog alerted on the locker, and they found the glass pipe inside a book bag.

The boy who owns the book bag was taken to the police station, booked and released to his mother’s custody.

Schools Superintendent Matthew Bowen said during a meeting earlier this week, police, firefighters and school administrators determined they could include the police department’s canine unit in the safety drills to ensure there are no drugs in the schools.

“We will continue as we deem necessary to have more proactive and preventive drills to ensure throughout the district that drugs are not found, and if so, students will be held accountable,” Bowen said. “They will participate in a due-process hearing as outlined in a policy in the student handbook.”

He said that in general, students can face a 10-day, out-of-school suspension for possession of drug paraphernalia, with a recommendation for expulsion.
