Historical Society to host talk

The Mahoning Valley Historical Society will host a presentation titled, “Challenges of Preservation Planning: A Cambodian Perspective,” at 7 p.m., on May 31, in the Tyler Mahoning Valley History Center. The speaker will be Songmeng Chea, a foreign-service national with the U.S. Embassy in Cambodia who previously lived and studied in northeastern Ohio.

Students make the Dean’s List

More than 7,600 students made The University of Akron’s Dean’s List for spring 2014, including Alexandra Hulick, Spencer Skolnick, Ralph-Isaac Testa, Derek Breedlove, Meghan Delaney, Malissa Lynn, Stephen Marshall, Jeff Marsolo, Rory Sachire and Sean Stewart, all of Austintown.

Suzelis to have free seminar

Dr. Ted Suzelis, N.D., will be presenting a free seminar titled “Overcoming Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue” on June 12 at 6:30 p.m. at the Ohio Naturopathic Wellness Center located in South Bridge West (behind Second Sole) at 755 Boardman-Canfield Road, Suite D-3. Mill Creek ABWA to meet

The next meeting of the Mill Creek Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association will begin at 6:30 p.m. on June 10 at A La Cart Catering, located at 429 Lisbon Street in Canfield. Trunk show and talk on June 3

The Stitching Sisters Quilt Group of Austintown is announcing that “Quilt in a Day” author Pat Knochel will present a trunk show and talk on June 3 at 10 a.m. at Smith Corners Methodist Church (rear entrance) on State Route 46 and Kirk Road. AIS participates in study

In partnership with Westminster College, fifth-graders from Austintown Intermediate School (AIS) participated in an international research project. AIS was chosen for this study because they have worked with Westminster on previous studies and have a large class of students from different backgrounds.

Three schools were involved in the study and were required to have parental permission. The goal of the study is to find out how a student’s school experience impacts their religious views or practices. The students completed a series of questions and the results are currently being compared and contrasted with the two other schools in Israel.

Free summer program

The Austintown Local Schools will be offering a free, federally funded summer breakfast and lunch program for children 18-years-old and under at the Austintown Elementary School from June 9 - Aug. 15. The program is run by volunteers from the community and is still in need of volunteers to help with science projects, art, sports clinics, crafts, reading time, yoga, zumba and any other fun activities for children.

Wirtz named to Dean’s List

Emily Wirtz of Austintown was named to the Dean’s List at Ashland University. Wirtz is majoring in psychology and Christian worship. She is the daughter of Robert and Patricia Wirtz of Austintown. Wirtz is a 2013 graduate of Austintown Fitch High School.

Fishing Derby to be June 1

The Austintown Optimist Club will host its annual Fishing Derby June 1 at the Lake Milton Fish and Game Club. The derby is for special needs participants and all participants must be accompanied by a guardian. Family members may fish, but will not be eligible for prizes. There is no charge and no fishing license is required. The Optimist Club will supply the needed tackle, poles and bait for the participants. Break the Chains event

Legacy Dog Rescue will host its third annual Break the Chains event June 7 at Family Video on the corner of Kirk Road and Raccoon Road in Austintown to raise awareness about dogs living chained outside. Dedicated members of the rescue and the community will chain themselves to dog houses, regardless of the weather, for 12 hours in hopes of encouraging people to bring their pets inside. There will be a bake sale, concession stand, small Chinese auction and kettle corn.

Oh Wow! to close on Mondays

Starting on Memorial Day (May 26), OH WOW! The Roger & Gloria Jones Children’s Center for Science & Technology will be closed on Mondays. Summer hours remain in effect through Labor Day, (Sept. 1).

Riverfest 2014

Friends of the Mahoning River will be hosting Riverfest 2014 at the B&O Station in Youngstown June 7 from 12-4 p.m. Admission and parking are free. There will be kayak and canoe rides provided by Trumbull Canoe Trails. Educational and historical activities and crafts for children will be available. Fizz, Boom, Read!

Summer reading starts June 1 at the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County. There will be special presenters, authors, prizes and surprises for participants and a chance to meet an author. Go to libraryvisit.org/summerreading or visit a PLYMC library near you to register. Fizz, Boom, Read! is summer reading with a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) theme. Children receive a coupon for a free ice cream cone from Dairy Queen and a Mahoning Valley Scrappers Game voucher just for signing up. For the first four hours read, children receive a paperback book while supplies last.

For the first eight hours read, children receive a beach ball (birth to age 8) or a light up yo-yo (ages 9-11). Children ages three and up will also get one free admission ticket to OH WOW! The Roger and Gloria Jones Children’s Center for Science and Technology. For the first 12 hours read, children earn a chance to win a $25 gift card to Toys‘R’Us (birth to age 8). Children ages 9-11 earn a chance to win an iPod shuffle. Children who read 30 hours will receive a special invitation to meet Jennifer Holm, author of “Babymouse” and “Squish,” when she visits in August.

Mill Creek MetroParks to celebrate ribbon cutting

The public and media are invited to a ribbon cutting ceremony May 30 at 10 a.m. at the James L. Wick Jr. Recreation Area to celebrate the grand opening of Mill Creek MetroParks’ new Julianna Kurinka Children’s Play Area. MetroParks officials will present information about this project, recognize donors and be available for interviews and photographs. The project, a complete site redesign, consisted of numerous components, including demolition of existing infrastructure, adding and upgrading utilities, construction of new play areas, a perimeter concrete walk/curbing, and new sand volleyball courts, installation of new site lighting and furnishings and rehabilitation of the Thomas J. Bresko Pavilion. The new Children’s Play Area consists of an Adventure Play Area, Sand Play Area and Tot Play Area. The proposed wet playground area will be constructed when the fundraising goal is met. Light refreshments and tours of the new Adventure, Sand and Tot Play Areas will follow the ceremony. Donors/funders to the project include the Julianna Kurinka Trust, Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley, J. Ford Crandall Memorial Foundation, Frank and Pearl Gelbman Foundation, Rotary Club of Youngstown, Thomases Family Endowment, and W. E. Bliss Foundation. Proceeds from the Fitness Together 5K, Mill Creek Maple Syrup sales, and MetroParks’ Green Cathedral Half Marathon/5K were designated to support this project as well.

Legacy Dog Rescue seeking donations

Legacy Dog Rescue and Friends of Fido are joining forces to help Sophie, a blind poodle mix picked up in Youngstown as a stray. With surgery she can regain her sight, but $4,000 must be raised for the procedure. On June 14 from 12-5 p.m., there will be a Chinese auction at Davidson’s Restaurant and Tavern, located at 3636 Canfield Road. There will be numerous baskets and prizes to win, including a $100 bill in the auction, a keurig coffee maker, statuary and more. There will also be a $100 lottery tree raffle. On June 24, meet at MetroParks Bikeway Trailhead at MetroParks Farm at 6 p.m. for an easy hike of 2 or 4 miles. Volunteer-led recreational hikes are generally faster paced and focus on exercising in the outdoors.

Peregrine falcons, a threatened species, have been nesting in downtown Youngstown for a decade. Family tour day

Introduction to floral drawing

Baby Bargain Boutique set for June 7

Boardman Park will be having its annual Baby Bargain Boutique on June 7 at the Masters Pavilion from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Admission is free with a non-perishable food item donation for Second Harvest Food Bank. The Baby Bargain Boutique allows families to purchase good usable baby, children and maternity clothing, toys, books furniture and much more for children under the age of eight. For those who have items to sell, reservations for table rentals start May 7 for Boardman residents and May 8 for non-residents. Table reservations can only be made at the park office from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Indoor and outdoor spots are available. The price for Boardman residents is $20 for inside and $15 for outside. The price for non-residents is $25 for inside and $20 for outside. Outside spots must bring their own table and may use a pop-up tent. You may only reserve two tables/spots. Boardman Park to offer Adventure Camp

Register online for Boardman Park Adventure Camp at www.boardmanparkcamp.com. You will create your own account where you sign up for your preferred weeks and track your payments. Discounts will be given for early bird enrollment if paid by June 6. Boardman resident and multi-sibling family discounts will be offered when application is completed. The camp will take place June 16 through August 15. Camp hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. for children who have completed kindergarten and up to 12 years old. Arrangements can be made if you need to bring campers early or pick them up later. In addition to experiencing the outdoors, the children will benefit from arts and crafts, team building, creative arts, science and sports. The goal of the camp is to offer young minds the opportunity to explore their imagination, discover physical fitness, expand their knowledge of sports and develop a growing sense of adventure through diverse activities. MCCTC students host spring plant sale

Students in the horticulture program at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center will host the school’s annual spring plant sale beginning May 5. Students have prepared items including assorted annuals, hanging baskets and fresh vegetables. Flats of flowers will also be available. The horticulture green house will be open to the public from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m., Monday through Friday, throughout the month of May until all items are sold. The Ursuline Center announces 2014 guided labyrinth walks

The Ursuline Center, located at 4280 Shields Road, will begin its 2014 guided labyrinth walk season April 27 (weather permitting) with a short presentation on the Spirituality of Labyrinths at 2 p.m. in the center and a guided walk immediately following. This year the center is offering a series of themed walks. On April 27 at 2 p.m., the walk will be “On the Path to Rebirth,” on May 13 at 6:30 p.m. the walk will be “On the Path to Healing,” on June 19 at 6:30 p.m. the walk will be “On the Path to Emancipation: Freedom of Mind, Body and Spirit” in correlation with the Juneteenth holiday, on July 15 at 6:30 p.m., the walk will be “On the Path to Growing,” on Aug. 14 at 6:30 p.m., the walk will be “On the Path to Accepting,” on Sept. 16, 6:30 p.m., the walk will be “On the Path to Peace” and on Oct. 12 at 2 p.m., the walk will be “On the Path to Awareness” (presentation on Spirituality of Labyrinths in the center).

All people of faith are invited to attend, whether they are new to or experienced with walking a labyrinth. Walking the labyrinth usually takes about 20 minutes. People wishing to experience the Labyrinth but unable to make one of the guided walks can come anytime at their own convenience. There are printed guides that give suggestions for following the path provided at the Labyrinth’s entrance, but there is no right or wrong way to experience the sacred walk. People can use the labyrinth in any way they need. The Ursuline Center Labyrinth is a ministry of the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown and open year-round from dawn to dusk for all persons of faith. Gamblers Anonymous to meet

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Cornersburg. Banding the baby falcons

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ Division of Wildlife hopes to have newly hatched peregrine falcons to band and the public is invited to watch. If you would like to attend this special activity, which will take place downtown on a week day, Ford Nature Center will keep a contact list. As soon as ODNR-DOW gives the details, you will be contacted with the date and time.

First Kayak trip of 2014

Nicotine Anonymous to meet on Wednesdays

Nicotine Anonymous is a fellowship of individuals from every walk of life who meets every Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Wickliffe Presbyterian Church, located at 45 Idlewood Road in Austintown, to solve their common problem - an addiction to nicotine. The group is based on the twelve steps of Alcoholics Anonymous and the only requirement to join is a desire to stop using nicotine. Knitting classes

The Friends of PLYMC are sponsoring series of knitting classes April 14, May 12 and June 9 from 10-11:30 a.m. in the meeting room of the Austintown library. If you have a Friends of PLYMC paid membership, classes are free. If you aren’t a Friend’s member but would like to attend the program, you can join the Friends for $10, which gives you a membership and covers all costs of the knitting class.

Open enrollment continues

The Austintown Local School District is continuing with its open enrollment policy for the 2014-15 school year. New for next school year, they will not be accepting any new open enrollments students in grades 10, 11 or 12. This does not apply to existing open enrollment students who are currently enrolled in Austintown. New open enrollment students (accepting grades K–9 only) can begin to complete applications on March 3. One application must be completed for each student.
