Free paper shredding

YOUNGSTOWN

The Better Business Bureau and Mahoning County recycling division are sponsoring a free paper-shredding event from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Covelli Centre, 229 E. Front St. Participants may bring up to three boxes of documents to be shredded in conjunction with “Secure Your ID Day,” which is designed to prevent identity theft.

Pruning clinic planned

YOUNGSTOWN

The Ohio State University Extension is hosting a free Urban Landscape Pruning Clinic from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Arms Family Museum, 648 Wick Ave., rain or shine. Participants will learn to prune for maximum flower potential, to minimize disease and make great shapes in landscapes.

The session will review proper tools, techniques and information needed to do the best job. Participants will walk around the museum grounds and test their pruning skills. Dress for outdoor activities and bring a lawn chair if you wish to sit. Pre-registration is required. For information and preregistration, call 330-533-5538.

Cancellation of event

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Mahoning Valley Historical Society has had to cancel the “Challenges of Preservation Planning: A Cambodian Perspective,” which had been scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday in the Tyler Mahoning Valley History Center, downtown.

Streets to be closed

WARREN

Various streets in Warren will be closed for events over the weekend.

Central Parkway Southeast between East Market and South streets will be closed from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday for the St. Paul Lutheran Church Bike Rodeo.

High Street at Elm Road and Chestnut will be closed from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday for a VFW Post 1090 event.

Lightning strike

YOUNGSTOWN

Fire crews were called to Sunshine Brite Laundromat, 2608 South Ave., on Wednesday afternoon after a witness reported hearing a loud boom, followed by tiles falling from the ceiling. According to 21 WFMJ-TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner, officials believe that lightning hit the roof of the building about 2:30 p.m.; the electrical charge then traveled down an electrical conduit and set fire to insulation in the ceiling. Most of the damage is located beneath the roof. No one was injured.

Helmuth guilty plea

WARREN

A 45-year-old North Bloomfield man pleaded guilty Wednesday to a reduced charge of voluntary manslaughter in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court.

William J. Helmuth was originally indicted by a grand jury for the murder of 41-year-old Craig C. Neighbor of Bristolville, which occurred during a fight at the Bristol Inn, corner of state routes 45 and 88, in January, according to 21 WFMJ-TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner. Helmuth will be sentenced later.
