YOUNGSTOWN

Police working an operating a vehicle impaired checkpoint on the South Side late Saturday made two drug arrests and found some illegal liquor in addition to arresting a man wanted on several warrants.

Carl Olson, 19, of Boardman was asked to pull into a diversion area at the checkpoint run by city police and the Ohio State Highway Patrol at Market Street and Avondale Avenue about 9:55 p.m. Saturday after officers detected a strong smell of marijuana in his car.

Reports said Olson admitted having marijuana on him, and after a search, police found a mason jar of suspected marijuana buds in the pocket of his shirt and another jar of sis[ected marijuana buds inside the car. Also inside the car police found a cutting board with suspected marijuana residue on it, a digital scale, and a device used for smoking marijuana.

Officers asked Olson if he was selling the drugs, and reports said Olson said he had just bought the suspected marijuana for $250. He denied selling it even though he had items marijuana dealers often use, reports said.

In the trunk, police found 19 bottles of beer and two mason jars in a cooler. The jars were marked “moonshine,” and were full, reports said.

Olson was booked into the Mahoning County jail on charges of trafficking in drugs, illegal transportation of intoxicating liquor, possession of drug paraphernalia and underage consumption of alcohol.

Later at the checkpoint, about 10:40 p.m., reports said a car driven by 24-year-old Deon J. Rogers of Lucius Avenue passed through and was pulled over because of a strong marijuana smell. A records check showed that Rogers had three open suspensions on his license and six previous convictions for driving under suspension.

His passenger, Darrell Peterman, 25, of Youngstown, gave police a false name, and when he was taken out of the car, tried to pull away, reports said. He had to be taken to the ground to be handcuffed. Reports said he had $318 in cash and a bag of suspected marijuana on him and also was wanted on warrants for domestic violence and two separate driving-under-suspension warrants. He also had charges of resisting arrest and falsification added and was taken to the county jail.

Warren Municipal Court files show Peterman has four open warrants.

On the West Side about 1:15 a.m. Sunday, Shakir Provitt, 28, of Warren was arrested on charges of obstruction of official business and resisting arrest after reports said he failed to obey commands to get out of a car stopped by state troopers at Mahoning and Schenley avenues. City police reports said he was a passenger in the car, and he would not show his right hand and refused to get out of the car until he was told he would be stunned.

Reports also said he had to be taken to the ground by corrections officers at the jail because he refused to cooperate there.
