The Community Corrections Association will demolish the former sanctuary of the 1917-vintage John Knox Presbyterian Church, 1806 Market St., and retain the rear parish house built in 1956 for use as a 32-bed facility for CCA’s female clients.
David Stillwagon, CCA’s chief executive officer, said his agency originally intended to use both parts of the former church, which it bought for $60,000, but later determined it would be too expensive to bring the sanctuary up to current building and fire codes for the new use.
The demolition will begin Wednesday and take two to three weeks, with the new women’s center expected to open July 7, he said.
The acquisition of the John Knox building brings the number of CCA buildings on Market Street to seven.
The opening of the women’s center will raise the agency’s residential capacity to from 169 to 201 and increase its staff from 100 to 115.
CCA provides residential, vocational and substance-abuse rehabilitation services to probationers and former prison inmates.
