NEW SPRINGFIELD

It is still undecided if Springfield Township will enter into a host agreement with Mahoning County’s Solid Waste Management District.

The proposal is in the discussion stage, but such an agreement likely would mean additional needed money to improve roads and other aspects of the township’s infrastructure, Trustee Robert Orr said during Wednesday’s meeting.

For years, the area has needed new sewer lines, but the undertaking would cost between $3 million and $4 million, Orr estimated, adding that officials can’t rely solely on state funds for the project.

In reality, however, the area would benefit little from a host agreement, countered Reed Metzka, a former township trustee who attended the meeting.

Metzka, who served 20 years as trustee, said the agreement would ensure that the waste-management district, the county health department and others would receive the financial benefits instead of the township.
