Pittsburgh scored four runs in the first inning and five in the third en route to a 12-1 victory over the Youngstown State baseball team on Tuesday afternoon at Charles Cost Field.
Phil Lipari was 3-for-4, and Brent Gillespie had two hits for the Penguins. Steven Shelinsky Jr. hit a three-run homer in the first as part of a five RBI afternoon, and Matt Johnson was 3-for-4 with three RBIs for the Panthers.
YSU starter Nic Manuppelli allowed the homer to Shelinsky and the fourth run he allowed in the first was unearned. He exited after reaching his pitch count with two outs in the inning, and Patrick O’Brien came in to pitch 1 1/3 scoreless innings.
Lipari led off the third with a double and scored on Josh White’s infield single with two outs to make the score 4-1. But the Panthers (8-10, 1-5 Atlantic Coast Conference) plated five runs, three of which came with two outs, in the bottom half off Brendon Shoemake. Pittsburgh added three two-out runs in the sixth off Jeremy Quinlan for the final scoring of the game.
Alex Frey pitched a scoreless seventh, and Kevin Yarabinec did not allow a run in the eighth.
Pitt starter Casey Roche allowed one run on four hits in three innings, and three relievers combined to allow four hits in six scoreless frames.
YSU (2-13) will play at Kent State at 3 p.m. today.
