CANADA GEESE Handling the nuisance

Tuesday, March 18, 2014

The Ohio Division of Wildlife lists several ways to deal with unwanted Canada geese, as they become more prevalent with the return of spring. Ways to harass geese into leaving an area include:

Pyrotechnics: These include shell crackers, screamers and bangers that make loud or high-pitched sounds to scare the birds.

Visual deterrents: Flags, scarecrows, shiny tape and balloons can repel geese but should be moved every few days before the geese become accustomed to the devices.

Dogs: Border collies are especially effective in discouraging the birds from congregating in areas such as golf courses, ponds, industrial parks and apartment complexes.

Lasers: The beams of light, especially green, cause them to quickly leave the area, though this technique is effective only at night. Users should direct the light beam several yards from the geese, then slowly aim it toward them.

Tips for controlling the birds: Refrain from feeding them, stop fertilizing grass, install barriers such as tightly stretched wire strands at least 18 inches tall around entire ponds and lakes and have steep pond banks.

Tips for success: Use a combination of methods and realize that no single approach is 100 percent effective. Consistency and persistence are key.
