Third-grade students at North Elementary got a taste of the history of Poland on June 3 when they went on a field trip, walking the Poland historical sites.

“Our Historic Poland field trip began the week before by reading about Poland in our third-grade book by Elaine Morlan,” third-grade teacher Tracy Kaschak said. “We let the students choose the topics/pictures that we would discuss by listing three items that they were interested in as they took a ‘picture walk’ through the book. We also read the story ‘White Saddle’ to the students. The author lived in the house which is currently Harriet’s Sprinkles.”

Kaschak said Dave Smith of the Poland Historical Society led the way on the walk, giving the students information about the historic sites they visited.

“We contacted Dave Smith of the Poland Historical Society to help guide us through our actual field trip,” she said. “We started the morning at his house. He led us down Youngstown-Poland Road, stopping at various historical houses and explaining their significance. We stopped at Peterson Park, learning about the statue, as we made our way up 170 towards Village Hall and Poland Presbyterian Church.

“Our final destination was Wittenauer’s Cafe where the students enjoyed a cookie and lemonade.”
