Canfield students shine at art show

Families, friends, students, community members and art enthusiasts attended the 2014 Canfield Local Schools Student Art Show, which highlighted works of art from C.H. Campbell Elementary School, Hilltop Elementary School, Canfield Village Middle School and Canfield High School, at the high school gymnasium May 21-22.
More than 1,000 pieces of art were displayed from high school art students alone. Senior art students created their own display booths and chose which pieces of art from their classes they wanted to showcase.
The art students used several mediums to create their pieces, including computer graphics, 3-D sculptures, digital imaging, movies, pencil drawings and oil on canvas.
Each piece of the high school students’ art was entered into the judging. Medals were awarded to the top 70 award winners, with trophies going to the top 10 winners.
The top 10 included: best of show, Marcella Sinclair; first runner-up, Haley Holt; second runner-up, Sam Tedesco; third runner-up, Lauren Adams; fourth runner-up, Jacob Wojtowicz; fifth runner-up, Bailey Brocker; sixth runner-up, Candace Smith; seventh runner-up, Jacqueline Cook; eighth runner-up, Paul Whitehead and ninth runner-up, Christina Cooper.
Judging the art show was Susan Jacobs, adjunct professor at Ashland University and instructor for Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV Continuing Professional Education in Pennsylvania and Janet Marstellar, a graduate of Youngstown State University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree, along with a teaching degree.
Kathryn Antal and Kevin Hoopes are the Canfield High School fine art teachers and Pete Graff is the computer graphics instructor. Nancy Hulea and Heidi Garwing serve as art teachers at CVMS and Diane Leonard is the elementary art teacher at both Hilltop Elementary and C.H. Campbell Elementary.
Best of show winner Sinclair, a senior, used pastels and charcoal for her winning portrait, which she created in her AP Drawing class. Sinclair will attend Westminster College in the fall to major in Fine Art.
“This was completely unexpected. I was very surprised this piece won best of show. I didn’t think this was my strongest piece, so to win with this portrait was very unexpected, but it’s great,” Sinclair said.
First runner-up Haley Holt, a senior who will study art education at Kent State University, was a bit surprised at her win.
“I knew I had worked hard all year, but I wasn’t expecting first-runner up. It’s very exciting,” Holt said.
Nagmita Shrestha, junior, and Candace Smith, junior, both students of Hoopes, were named finalists in Congressman Bill Johnson’s 2014 Congressional Art Competition, An Artistic Discovery. Their artwork will be displayed in one of Congressman Johnson’s regional offices.
Shrestha was the overall winner of the art competition last year and her winning piece hung in the U.S. Capitol with other congressional district winners from around the country.
The Canfield High School Jazz Band, under the direction of Mike Kelly, performed during the second night of the art show.
