NFL removes cap on concussion damages
PHILADELPHIA
The NFL has agreed to remove a cap on concussion-related damages after a judge questioned whether a proposed settlement provided enough money to cover retired players.
A revised settlement agreement filed Wednesday also eliminates a provision that barred anyone who gets concussion damages from the NFL from suing the NCAA or other amateur football leagues.
U.S. District Judge Anita Brody had denied preliminary approval of the deal in January that set a $675 million cap on damages, because she worried the money could run out sooner than expected. The settlement is designed to last at least 65 years and cover retirees who develop Lou Gehrig’s disease and other neurological problems.
Dallas gets Chandler in 6-player deal with NY
Dallas and the New York Knicks have agreed to a six-player trade that brings center Tyson Chandler back to the Mavericks three years after he helped them win a championship only to leave right away in free agency.
The Mavericks sent guards Jose Calderon, Shane Larkin and Wayne Ellington and center Samuel Dalembert to the Knicks for Chandler and point guard Raymond Felton in the deal announced Wednesday.
The Knicks also get both Dallas picks in Thursday night’s draft, a pair of second-round selections at Nos. 34 and 51. New York didn’t have a draft pick before the trade.
Curt Schilling says his cancer is in remission
PROVIDENCE, R.I.
Curt Schilling, the former Boston Red Sox pitcher turned ESPN television analyst, says his cancer is in remission.
Schilling announced the news Wednesday on social media. He thanked his Boston-based medical team. He announced his diagnosis in February, saying he planned to “embrace this fight, just like the rest of them, with resolute faith, and head on.”
He hadn’t indicated the type of cancer or his prognosis, but has posted pictures of himself undergoing treatments.
Schilling starred in World Series for the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Red Sox. He later launched a video game company, 38 Studios, whose collapse is the subject of a lawsuit in Rhode Island after it got a $75 million state-guaranteed loan. Schilling has said he lost as much as $50 million in 38 Studios.
