Drug tools, kids in car

Staff report

GIRARD

A driver stopped by police early Monday had drug- abuse instruments and seven unrestrained children in her car, a police report says.

An officer stopped Jamie Schmitt, 36, of Shannon Road at 1:43 a.m. after he saw her going west on East Main Street.

The officer saw seven children in the back seat “of various ages,” the report says.

When the officer asked for Schmitt’s identification, he found that her license was suspended, the report said.

He asked to search her car, and she gave permission, the report said.

He discovered empty plastic bags that he believed had been used to “transport illegal substances.”

He found a film canister with a tinfoil top containing liquid residue and an empty Suboxone 8 mg sublingual package.

The officer believes those items are used together to dissolve Suboxone 8 mg for intravenous abuse, the report said.

The officer also found two hypodermic needles beneath the center console, both of which appeared recently used, the report said.

Schmitt was arrested for possession of drug-abuse instruments, the report said.

While they were processing Schmitt’s arrest, police discovered one previous drug-abuse conviction, escalating the drug-abuse instrument charge to a first-degree misdemeanor.

She was also cited with driving under suspension, driving the wrong way on a one-way street, and lack of child restraints.

Her vehicle was towed.

She is to appear in court at 9 a.m. July 1.
