UPDATED | GM stops Cruze deliveries

DETROIT — General Motors has told Chevrolet dealers in the U.S. and Canada to stop delivery of new or used 2013-2014 Chevrolet Cruze vehicles.

Jim Cain, GM spokesman, said the halt notice for Cruzes that was issued Tuesday involves a mechanical issue associated with the steering wheel's airbag. Some vehicles may be equipped with a driver’s air bag inflator module that may have been assembled with an incorrect part.

The air-bag supplier, Tokyo-based Takata Corp., was also involved in a recall Monday that affected BMW, Chrysler, Ford, Honda, Mazda, Nissan and Toyota.

Cain said the halt notice was issued for U.S. and Canada "because we need to figure out exactly how many bad parts were shipped and were installed and that's ongoing for now."

According to the Associated Press in Monday's recall, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation this month after getting six reports of air bags rupturing in Florida and Puerto Rico. Three people were injured in those cases. It had estimated 1.1 million vehicles in the U.S. could be affected, but the total is likely to climb.

This halt notice comes after GM announced the Lordstown-built Cruzes sales were up 41 percent from last year with 32,393 sold in May compared to 23,055 in May 2013. That number was slightly lower than the highest amount of Cruze sales in June 2013 of 32,871, according to Vindicator files.
