Zallow leads area athletes at nationals

GREENSBORO, N.C.

Warren JFK junior Chad Zallow earned two top-eight finishes at last weekend’s New Balance national outdoor track and field meet at North Carolina A&T.

Zallow, a two-time state champion in the 110-meter hurdles, placed eighth in that event at nationals with a time of 14.28. He also took seventh in the 400 hurdles (54.15).

McDonald sophomore Christian Smith placed third in the discus with a throw of 186 feet, 8 inches and placed 18th in the shot put (55-9 1/4)

Boardman senior Mark Hadley placed eighth in the 5K (14:40.68).

On the girls side, Fitch senior Gabby Figueroa was third in the hammer throw (180-1).

In the emerging elite division, which is open to athletes who did not make the qualifying standards for the championship races, Austintown Fitch senior Sam Ortz placed sixth in the 110 hurdles (14.76) and Boardman senior Alan Burns was 13th in the mile (4:18.14).

Boardman’s Sheldon Broyles took 17th in the freshman 100 with a time of 11.65.
