YSU football to play at West Virginia in 2016

YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown State football team will play its first contest against West Virginia on Sept. 10, 2016, at Milan Puskar Stadium in Morgantown, both schools announced on Friday. The contest will be the Penguins’ first-ever matchup with a program from Big 12 Conference and will be YSU’s first football game in the state of West Virginia since playing at Marshall in November 2001.

Browns announce fan sign-up for practices

Cleveland Browns fans can sign up for free tickets to attend the team’s 13 training camp practice sessions this summer. Twelve of the practices will be held at the team’s training facility. There also will be a family day at InfoCision Stadium in Akron on Aug. 2. Fans who register online at http://bit.ly/1m3PXGb can print out admission tickets. Online registration will begin 10 a.m. Thursday.

Fans can sign up online for as many as four practices and obtain tickets for as many as five people. Those who want to bring bigger groups or attend more practices should call the Browns guest services department at 440-891-5050.

Newton Falls golfer tops NOPGA field

ALLIANCE

Jacob Harrah of Newton Falls shot a 1-under par 71 on Friday to win the boys 16-19 age bracket in a Northern Ohio PGA Junior Golf tournament at Tannenhauf Golf Course. Harray topped Alexander Miday of Canton by three strokes.

Other area golfers scores in the same age group: Isaac Davidson, East Liverpool, 78; Bradley Miller, Hanoverton 79; Quintin Carr, Lisbon 83; Eric Rohrabaugh, Cortland, 84; Zackery Berry, Newton Falls, 86.

In the girls 16-19 group, Emily Blaner of East Liverpool shot 82 and finished one stroke behind three golfers who were tied for first. Also, Reed McGeehan of East Liverpool shot 108 and Lexie Page of Canfield 129 in the girls 13-15 group and Andrew Hendricks of Leetonia shot 58 (9 holes) in the boys 8-10 age group.

Texas blanks Vandy, 4-0; forces rematch

Nathan Thornhill and John Curtiss pitched Texas’ second straight shutout at the College World Series, and the Longhorns forced a second bracket final against Vanderbilt with a 4-0 victory Friday. The Longhorns (46-20) and Commodores (48-20) will meet again tonight, with the winner advancing to the best-of-three finals against Virginia or Mississippi. Those teams had their game on Friday suspended after a lightning delay with the game tied 0-0 in the second inning. It will be resumed today. Mississippi must beat Virginia twice to advance to the finals.

Top prospect Embiid has surgery on foot

Top prospect Joel Embiid had surgery on the stress fracture in his right foot Friday, and now he waits. The Kansas center had two screws inserted into the navicular bone in his right foot at Southern California Orthopedic Institute, according to a release distributed by agent Arn Tellem. It is not clear how long Embiid will be out, with estimates ranging from nine months to a full season.
