Program to focus on 50th anniversary of Civil Rights Bill

The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Planning Committee of Mahoning County will host “An Observance: The 50th Anniversary of the Signing of the Civil Rights Bill” at 6 p.m. July 1 at the Youngstown Museum of Industry and Labor, 151 W. Wood St.

To honor and remember the signing of this historic piece of legislation, the event will include a presentation on the background of the bill.

Keynote speaker will be Al Bright, retired Youngstown State University professor of art history, whose topic will be the history of the civil-rights movement.

Representatives of various groups, including members of the Native American, labor, Latino, African-American, Muslim, Jewish, women’s and LGBT communities, will speak on how the Civil Rights Act and movement have impacted them.

Jaladah Aslam, the Rev. Kenneth Simon and Penny Wells are the conveners of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Planning Committee.
