1764: Jose Gervasio Artigas, considered the father of Uruguayan independence, is born in Montevideo.

1864: During the Civil War, the Confederate sloop-of-war CSS Alabama is sunk by the USS Kearsarge (also a sloop-of-war) off Cherbourg, France.

1865: Union troops commanded by Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger arrive in Galveston, Texas, with news that the Civil War is over, and that all remaining slaves in Texas are free, an event celebrated to this day as “Juneteenth.”

1910: The first Father’s Day is celebrated in Spokane, Wash. (The idea for the observance is credited to Sonora Louise Smart Dodd.)

1934: The Federal Communications Commission is created; it replaces the Federal Radio Commission.

1989: James M. Conti Sr. says that since he opened Austintown Ambulatory Care Center, the area’s first outpatient surgery center in 1981, the operation has grown from himself and two employees to more than 100 employees in Youngstown and Austintown.

Girard opens its 35th annual homecoming with a sports theme and will include a run, a kids run and a parade. Cathy Migliozzi, 17, is chosen 1989 homecoming queen.

Joyce Pogany of Austintown is named president of the board of directors of the Mahoning Valley Camp Fire Council.

1974: More than 3 million pennies are collected in a four-week drive by Union National Bank and Peoples Bank in Youngstown, which paid $1.100 for every 100 pennies brought in during a shortage of the coins. Union has suspended the program; Peoples is continuing it.

Joseph X. Vukovich of Hubbard is elected grand knight of the Knights of Columbus Council 2072.

Three students from Mahoning County and two from Trumbull will be among 135 members of the Ohio State Fair Youth Choir that will tour Europe. Local members are Deanna Selders of Greenford, David King of North Jackson, Peter Terpenning of Canfield, Darrell Roberts and Gloria Roscoe, both of Cortland.

1964: A Youngstown delegation is in Detroit meeting with General Motors Corp. officials to discuss locating the Fisher Body Chevrolet assembly plant in Lordstown and to work on details of helping GM personnel to find homes in the area.

A 44-year-old New Castle, Pa., father is charged with child neglect after doctors at New Castle Hospital say a 15-month old son became blind due to malnutrition. The man and his wife have 13 children and are expecting another.

1939: Trumbull County will open its newest public building, the courthouse annex, located in the historic Kinsman House, built in 1835 on 5.5 acres adjacent to Monument Park in downtown Warren.

Ohio increases its tax on sweet wine from 15 cents per gallon to 30 cents and on dry wine from 10 cents to 12 cents, while reducing the tax on wine sold by the glass.
