Report: Youngstown supermax prison has highest pct. of gang members

COLUMBUS (AP) — A new report finds the percentage of Ohio inmates in recognized gangs remains steady at about 16 percent of the overall prison population.

The report by the Correctional Institution Inspection Committee found a total of 8,171 prison inmates classified as gang members. The highest percentage was at the state’s supermax prison in Youngstown, where two of every three inmates are in a gang.

The report released earlier this week also found the highest total number of gang members at Lebanon Correctional Institution with 792 inmates, or 31 percent of the population.

The top gang remains the Heartless Felons. Dozens of members of that gang were recently indicted in Cuyahoga County for alleged racketeering charges for activity in the Cleveland juvenile detention center.
