Knife attack gets Ohio man 11 years in prison

CLEVELAND (AP) — A judge has sentenced a Cleveland-area man to 11 years in prison for a savage butcher-knife attack on the man’s estranged wife and her son in January.

The Plain Dealer of Cleveland reports that 33-year-old Luis Figueroa ambushed and stabbed Carmen Perez when she walked into her apartment. Prosecutors said he was driven by jealousy because his estranged wife wanted to move on.

Figueroa also stabbed Perez’s 18-year-old son Alfredo Rivero in the face.

He pleaded guilty last month to charges including attempted murder, kidnapping and felonious assault.

The judge also sentenced Figueroa’s brother, 20-year-old Jonathan Galarza, to two years in prison for his role in the attack. Galarza had accompanied Figueroa to the apartment.

Perez told the judge that Figueroa doesn’t deserve mercy.
