Indians rained out; Brantley has concussion


CLEVELAND

The game between the Los Angeles Angels and Cleveland Indians scheduled for Wednesday night was postponed because of rain.

The game never got started. There was no immediate word on a makeup date. The teams were set to play Thursday afternoon, the last time the Angels were scheduled to be in Cleveland this season.

Also, Indians left fielder Michael Brantley was been diagnosed with a concussion and will likely be out of the lineup until Saturday.

The concussion was diagnosed when Brantley had tests Tuesday at the Cleveland Clinic. He was injured trying to break up a double play sliding into second base in the third inning Monday.

Scrappers, Doubledays washed out by rain

The game between the Mahoning Valley Scrappers and the Auburn Doubledays scheduled for Wednesday night was postponed because of rain.

The two teams will play a doubleheader today with the first game starting at 5:30 p.m. The second game will follow the finale of the first. Both games are scheduled for seven innings.

Phantoms’ Connor to skate at U.S. team camp

USA Hockey announced Phantoms forward Kyle Connor is among the 42 invitees participating in the National Junior Evaluation Camp, August 2-9, in Lake Placid, New York.

Players will audition for spots on the U.S. National Junior Team that will take part in the 2015 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Junior Championship, December 26, 2014-January 5, 2015, in Toronto and Montreal, Canada.

“It’s a huge honor,” said Connor. “Every time you get to put the USA jersey on and play for your country is a special feeling. I’m really excited.”

YSU program honored for APR improvement

The Youngstown State football program was the recipient of the FCS Athletics Directors Association APR award for having the most improved APR score in the Missouri Valley Football Conference in 2012-13.

YSU Athletic Director Ron Strollo received the award on behalf of the program last week at the FCS ADA Scholarship Luncheon at the NACDA Convention in Orlando.

The centerpiece of a NCAA reform package is the academic measurement for teams, known as the APR. The Academic Progress Rate (APR) Award recognizes one institution at each of the 13 FCS conferences that has the highest APR score.

Panthers OL reveals testicular cancer

CHARLOTTE, N.C.

Panthers offensive lineman Andrew McDonald says he expects to return next month for training camp after undergoing surgery in May for testicular cancer.

McDonald says doctors expect him to make a full recovery. The 25-year-old McDonald says he didn’t have any symptoms, but noticed a “bump on his skin” and met with doctors on May 19. He says he’s glad he did. Doctors determined he had testicular cancer and operated the following day to remove the mass.

McDonald says “it’s out and right now I should be all good.” He says he’ll need to return every few months for follow-up exams.

McDonald was “Player A” in the report on the Miami Dolphins’ bullying scandal this year that indicated he was among those bullied.

Nebraska’s Miles fined $100 in driving incident

LINCOLN, Neb.

Nebraska men’s basketball coach Tim Miles has been fined $100 for negligent driving.

The Lincoln Journal Star says Miles pleaded guilty and paid the fine last week. Miles was driving in Lincoln on May 16 when his sport utility vehicle struck another that had slowed in front of him. The impact pushed the other SUV into the back of a stopped pickup.

The other driver reported that she went to a hospital to be examined for neck and back pain. There were no other injuries.
