Gardening Basics: Shade Gardening

When: Saturday, 10–11:30 a.m.

What: Learn how to light up the shady areas of your yard with colorful shade-loving plants, including annuals, perennials, trees and shrubs. Ellen Speicher will guide you on a tour of the shade garden at Fellows Riverside Gardens and discuss how to care for shade-loving plants.

RUSTIC GARDEN CONTAINERS

When: Sunday, 2-4 p.m.

What: Repurpose an old picket fence and tin cans into functional and attractive planters. We will have most everything you need to take home planted containers. Bring six empty 14-15-ounce tin cans (typical green bean can).

Where: Huston-Brumbaugh Nature Center Visitors Center, 16146 Daniel St. NE, Minerva.

Cost: Free

Details: Registration required, limited to 16. For ages 12 and older.

Level 1 Food Safety Training

When: Monday, 9 a.m.-noon.

What: Basic food-safety education course approved by Ohio Department of Health for licensed food establishments.

Where: Mill Creek MetroParks Farm, state Route 46, Canfield.

Cost: $35

Learn to Grow Vegetables

When: Monday, 6-8 p.m.

What: Learn what’s growing in the garden and get questions answered about your own garden.

Where: Jubilee Gardens, 150 Lafayette St., Youngstown.

KIDS IN THE GARDEN: LIFE WITHOUT PLANTS?

When: Wednesday, 9 a.m.-noon.

What: Animal life, including humans, depends on plants for oxygen and food for survival. Kids will investigate the importance of plants as each participant dissects one. They also will care for the Children’s Garden, followed by a snack. Each participant will receive supplies.

Where: Huston-Brumbaugh Nature Center Visitors Center, 16146 Daniel St. NE, Minerva.

Cost: Free
