Fire causes $1M in damage to stores

BOARDMAN

Township fire officials estimated the damages to a shopping front by a fire Tuesday to be more than $1 million.

The fire at 8162 Market St. damaged four businesses, and damage-estimates were put at $750,000 to the structure and $350,000 to the contents of the businesses.

The cause of fire is under investigation, but authorities have ruled out arson.

Department officials were called to Allstate Insurance in the shopping strip June 5 and 6 to investigate suspicious odors. Nothing was found either time, a press release said.

Street closings

YOUNGSTOWN

These downtown streets will be closed to accommodate the 2014 Tough-Man Competition and fundraiser, sponsored by the Rust Belt Brewing Company, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday: Commerce Street between Hazel and Phelps streets, and three lanes of Commerce will be closed. One eastbound lane on Commerce will remain open, city officials said.

Summer youth camp scheduled

NORTH LIMA

Beaver Township will have its eighth annual Summer Youth Camp from 9 a.m. to noon from July 21 to 25. The camp is at Woodworth Park, off East Western Reserve Road between Market Street and Southern Boulevard, and is aimed for children age 9 to 12.

Mosquito spraying planned in Niles

Spraying for mosquito control in the city is scheduled for Wednesday after 8 p.m. In the event of rain, the alternative spraying date will be next Thursday.

Any individuals with respiratory problems should remain indoors with windows closed. Food should not be prepared or left outside during the spraying period. All pets should be brought indoors.

Evening hours set at MCCTC’s Bistro

Adult career-center students who are enrolled in the Culinary Restaurant Management program at Mahoning County Career and Technical Center will open The Bistro for evening hours.

The Bistro will be open from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, now through July 10, at MCCTC, 7300 N. Palmyra Road. The restaurant serves as an opportunity for students in the program to gain valuable, real-world experience operating a restaurant.
