Free HIV/AIDS testing June 27

YOUNGSTOWN

The Comprehensive Care Center, affiliated with Ursuline Sisters HIV/AIDS Ministry, is offering free HIV/AIDS testing June 27, National HIV Testing Day.

The testing sites and times are: American Red Cross, 3530 Belmont Ave., 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Walgreens, 2864 McCartney Road, 10 a.m. to noon; Walgreens, 525 E. Midlothian Blvd., noon to 3 p.m.

The testing is free to those 13 and older. It is a swab test involving no needles or blood, and results are available in about 20 minutes. The tests are done confidentially. Individuals do not have to give their names.

Hospice of the ValleySFlbvolunteer training

POLAND

Hospice of the Valley, 9803 Sharrott Road, is offering volunteer training from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Mondays, June 30-July 28, to people interested in learning companion volunteering for patients living with a terminal illness.

Volunteers provide respite care to the family members, at home or in a nursing home, and serve in a variety of other ways as well such as answering phones at the Hospice House, mailings, clerical, staffing health fairs and special events. Volunteers are needed in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties in Ohio and Beaver, Butler, Lawrence and Mercer counties in Pennsylvania.

Diabetes program at Boardman YMCA

BOARDMAN

The Davis Family YMCA in Boardman is offering the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program, a group-based program for adults at high risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

Classes are from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. beginning June 30 followed by eight monthly sessions. The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program is a lifestyle intervention and has been shown to reduce the number of new cases of diabetes by 58 percent overall and by 71 percent in adults older than 60, said Michelle Edison, program coordinator.

To be eligible, participants must be 18 and older with a body-mass index of 25 or greater and at risk for developing Type 2 diabetes or have been diagnosed with pre-diabetes. Youths under 18 and people diagnosed with diabetes do not qualify. A Y membership is not required for participation.

HMHP partners recognized

YOUNGSTOWN

All three Humility of Mary Health Partners hospitals were recently recognized by Donate Life Ohio, the Ohio Hospital Association and the Ohio Department of Health’s Second Chance Trust Fund for taking action to reduce the number of people in Ohio waiting for organ transplants.

St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown was named a Platinum Partner in the Community Hospital category of the 2013-14 Hospital Champions program, aimed at increasing organ, eye and tissue donor registration.

St. Joseph Health Center in Warren and St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center were named Gold Partners during the 2014 OHA annual meeting.

“We have a lot of fun with activities like Blue and Green Day in April when we encourage people to wear blue and green, but we also take supporting donation very seriously. The Donate Life flag flies over our hospitals year-round,” said Mariann Pacak, director of heart and vascular services.
