CANFIELD Students’ book drive benefits Akron Children’s

The 10th-grade Honors English class at Canfield High School practiced what it calls “civic action” — learning through helping others.

The class ran a book drive for the local branch of Akron Children’s Hospital.

Throughout the semester, the students dedicated time in and out of class to ensure the project’s success.

They wrote morning announcements, made boxes for drop-offs, spoke with representatives from Akron Children’s, created fliers, employed the help of several local businesses and visited Canfield’s elementary and middle schools to speak to the children about the importance of giving.

Ultimately, through the efforts of the students, donations dropped at schools, and the generosity of several independent benefactors, the class was able to donate almost 1,500 books to Akron Children’s Hospital.

“On the day of the delivery, the students helped sort, box and transport the donation to the library, where we were greeted with a truly shocked and thankful volunteer staff,” said teacher Kellie Brautigam.
