A small desk that was passed down to President William McKinley by his mother and kept at the White House while he lived there has been donated to the National First Ladies’ Library in northeast Ohio.
The archives director said the desk is a special item because few possessions from McKinley and his wife are still around, possibly because they were a mobile couple.
The desk with drawers on its long sides is being displayed at the Saxton McKinley House museum. That’s the Canton property where the couple sometimes stayed while McKinley was a congressman, governor and president. McKinley was born in Niles.
The desk was donated by William McKinley Duncan-O’Neal of Overland Park, Kansas. He’s the great-grandson of McKinley’s sister, who got the desk after McKinley’s 1901 assassination.
