JACKSON CENTER, Pa.

A 22-year-old man is in Mercer County jail after Pennsylvania State Police at Mercer say he shot a man in the arm at a home in the 1200 block of Franklin Road between 3 and 4 a.m. Wednesday. Bond was set at $250,000 for Matthew Sines at his arraignment. He is charged with attempted homicide, aggravated assault, simple assault, endangering the welfare of children, four counts of recklessly endangering another person and harassment. A news release from state police said at the time Sines shot the friend, a 26-year-old woman, a 17-year-old female and a 1-year-old boy were inside the home.

Lottery winner

CLEVELAND

A Youngstown man won the top prize drawing on an Ohio Lottery instant game. Thomas Surko won $100,000 in the Special Edition Cashword prize drawing July 17. After mandatory federal and state taxes totaling 29 percent, Surko will receive $71,000. Surko purchased the semifinalist entry ticket at the BP service station, 2069 E. Midlothian Blvd., Youngstown. BP will receive a $1,000 agent bonus for selling a semifinalist winning ticket.

Fundraiser planned

YOUNGSTOWN

“Library Dogs and Drafts” will be the theme of a fundraiser for the real-estate tax levy campaign of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County. Tickets are $20 each for the 4 to 8 p.m. Aug. 12 event at Suzie’s Dogs and Drafts, 32 N. Phelps St. The 15-branch library system seeks voter approval for renewing a 1.8-mill levy and adding 0.6-mill to it. The system would let a 1-mill levy expire, for an 11 percent tax reduction. If passed Nov. 4, the five-year levy would raise about $9.3 million a year and cost the owner of a $100,000 home $76 annually.

Pa. woman arrested

ELLWOOD CITY, PA.

A woman was arrested in the July 20 shooting at a Loop Street apartment that killed Thomas Lee Everett Paris, 43, and wounded a 34-year-old man.

A news release from Pennsylvania State Police in New Castle said Jessica Lynn Jackson, 29, of South Wayne Street, New Castle, surrendered to authorities Tuesday to face charges of attempted homicide, aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person, simple assault and hindering apprehension of prosecution.

She is accused of wounding Rashaud Alteric Smith, who was shot in the back.

D’Marco D. Hoskins, 22, of Highland Park, Mich., is charged with Paris’ death and is in Lawrence County Jail.

Jackson is also in jail in lieu of $100,000 bond after her arraignment Tuesday.

Street now one-way

HUBBARD

Lloyd Street in Hubbard is now a one-way street, heading east from Oakdale to Creed Avenue. Residents on the street petitioned city council to make the street one way because it is narrow, Mayor John Darko said.

Council passed legislation to do so at its last meeting.

Vacant home burns

YOUNGSTOWN

Fire reports say a vacant 2533 Oak Hill Ave. home burned to the ground early Wednesday. Crews called about 1 a.m. found the home in flames and let it burn to the ground. Damage is listed at $1,370. The cause is listed as undetermined.

There were no injuries.

Man facing charges

NEW CASTLE, Pa.

Police arrested a Detroit man Thursday in the June 20 murder of Andrew Edwards Jr., no age given, in the Crestview Gardens Housing Complex.

Antonio Kelly, 28, who has been staying in the Harbor Heights Housing Complex, is facing charges of criminal homicide, two counts of aggravated assault, simple assault, discharge of a firearm into an occupied structure, recklessly endangering another person, tampering with evidence and other charges.

Edwards was found dead of several gunshot wounds in an 1110 Pin Oak Drive hallway after police were called for a man shot.

A news release from police said Kelly has been in the Lawrence County jail on firearms charges for an unrelated incident.

Pipe replacement

BOARDMAN

A small portion of Mill Creek Park’s East Golf Hike and Bike Trail near Shields Road and the Shields Road trail entrance will be closed today for a pipe replacement. The closing is expected to be only for one day, a park spokeswoman said.

Parking lots will remain open at the golf course overflow parking area, from which a foot bridge over Mill Creek connects to the trail, and at the U.S. Route 224 entrance to the trail.

Burglary charge

YOUNGSTOWN

A man was arraigned in municipal court Wednesday, accused of taking tools out of a shed across the street from where he was doing drywall work.

Robert Sass, 28, of Bouquet Avenue, was arraigned on a charge of burglary before Magistrate Anthony Sertick. His bond was set at $10,000.

Reports say police were called to a home in the first block of South Brockway Avenue at about 4:25 p.m. Tuesday, where a woman said Sass, who was caked in drywall dust, was working. The witness said he walked across the street and took several tools out of a shed and took them to a Mahoning Avenue store.

Police went to the store where the employee told them a man covered in drywall dust had sold three tools for $15.

Sass was taken to the Mahoning County jail after he was arrested.

Copper wire stolen

YOUNGSTOWN

City police are investigating the theft of 300 feet of 3/4-inch copper grounding wire from a construction site in the 1000 block of Ohio Works Drive. According to a report, the theft occurred between 6:30 p.m. Tuesday and 6 a.m. Wednesday, when the wire was discovered to be missing. The wire was being run through a section of the building being constructed; the approximate value is $1,100 in material and $800 in labor costs.
